Professional Infrared (IRDA) BGA Rework/Reflow Station
- We are now using a professional infrared BGA rework station for all of our Xbox 360 repairs. Unlike hot-air, infrared does not use air-flow. No chance of blowing off a solder ball or component. Other advantages over hot-air rework stations:

Our IRDA BGA rework station allows us to rework CPU, GPU, HANA, ANA, RAM, South Bridge depending on issue or secondary error output. Solder reflows at 217 degrees Celsius. If you don't have the proper equipment or procedure, you won't reach these temperatures and will do more harm than good. Be careful with youtube fixes, towel tricks, cheap milky thermal paste, pennies, quarters, erasers or janky fan mods that can fry your system if you use non-standard power supplies (Intec PSUs). We also routinely fix systems that have been back from Microsoft or Gamestop repair centers. Also, using the wrong parts for an X-clamp fix can warp your board, push your GPU/CPU in, and permanently damage it beyond repair. Another thing you want to keep in mind- your GPU and other components on your motherboard can be reworked about 3 or 4 times before things start to deteriorate and serious damage starts to set in. This is why all repairmen provide 30 days warranty for teched systems (previously worked on). Get er done right the first time!

A Friend and a Farewell Present
August 7th, 2009
- Just had a past customer come through for some drive troubleshooting. His friend had installed a case mod with lights for him before he left for Iraq as a going away present. It's a custom halo etched XCM case with green LEDs and a digital thermal readout. Underneath the HDD it read "p.w.d. for you homie...". His friend didn't make it back from Iraq alive.

Man Charged with Altering Consoles
August 4th, 2009
- I was just informed that a modder was raided in OC today. It's not even mentioned on xbox-scene yet.

"Matt Crippen was taken into custody after more than a dozen game consoles – including Xbox, Playstation, Wii and other consoles – were seized from his Anaheim home by agents from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. According to a federal indictment, Crippen altered the consoles so that they would circumvent anti-piracy measures that helped to access copyrighted video games. According to a statement released by ICE, investigators with the agency began the investigation after receiving a tip from the Entertainment Software Association.  After appearing in federal court, Crippen was released and scheduled to appear for arraignment on Aug. 10". He was not accused of pirating games, just bypassing copy protection.

UPDATE: Matt plead not guilty and will be facing trial towards the end of next month (September). If you'd like to help Matt out with his legal fund you can do so here.

Just to be clear, we never have and never will sell or stock games, modchips, or premods. All the 360s we have in our shop are failed red ring of death consoles that people don't want anymore. The other Xbox and PS2 consoles are all junk motherboards with no mods on them. I said it countless of times before and I'll say it again, many people have come to me for repair and legit reasons. I've seen a mother with three kids, an applesauced drive, and scratched discs. I get the occasional Soccer or RPG freak that paid for an import that just wants to play it. I get the usual media buffs that want to turn their console into a streaming media center. I've even had a few that just wanted to use their console for development or screenshot purposes. Heck, you can now even play DivX on the Wii now. So the reasons are definitely there, lets just hope it's enough to keep the homebrew community alive. Homebrew actually drives innovation, just look at the 360 and it's focus on media and downloadable arcade games, not to mention Wii's virtual console.
